How to effectively use the ‘building blocks of health’ metaphor
The ‘building blocks of health’ metaphor is a powerful way to increase understanding about how a healthy society is shaped by the wider determinants of health.
Our research with the Health Foundation found that when we compare the process of building a healthy society to constructing a sturdy building, we can increase people’s understanding of the wider determinants of health, health inequalities, and the need for change.
This resource takes a closer look at how and when this metaphor works best, and when it might not be the right tool for the job.
